Pleural Catheter Placement

A Minimally Invasive Solution for Ongoing Fluid Buildup
A pleural catheter is a safe, long-term solution for patients experiencing recurrent fluid buildup in the chest (pleural effusion). This condition can cause difficulty breathing, chest discomfort, and reduced quality of life.
How It Works
Using ultrasound and fluoroscopy (X-ray imaging) for guidance, our interventional radiologists:
🔹 Insert a small, flexible catheter into the pleural space (the area around the lungs) through a tiny incision.
🔹 Tunnel the catheter under the skin to help secure it in place and reduce infection risk.
🔹 Provide patients with an easy-to-use drainage system to remove excess fluid at home, reducing the need for repeated hospital visits.
This outpatient procedure is performed under local anesthesia and provides immediate symptom relief.
Why Is This Procedure Done?
- To relieve shortness of breath and chest discomfort caused by pleural effusion
- As a long-term option for managing recurrent fluid buildup
- To reduce the need for frequent hospital visits for drainage procedures
- To improve comfort and maintain quality of life for patients with chronic conditions
